Ensuring safety and care is a top priority for the inhabitants of Off The Grid Animal Sanctuary (OTGAS). This Texas-based nonprofit is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating animals of various sizes, with owner Bionca Smith showering each one with love and affection.
The sanctuary exudes a palpable atmosphere of love, possibly the reason why a stray dog recently approached it. The disheveled pup patiently waited outside the gate, seeking assistance. OTGAS's residents quickly sensed his presence.
"He arrived at our sanctuary gates just 10 minutes ago," Smith shared in an Instagram post. "I heard the dogs barking wildly, so I glanced at the gates and noticed a dog peering in."
Responding promptly, Smith hurried to the gate to meet the forlorn canine. Despite his size, she hesitated initially, perceiving a hint of sadness in his eyes.
"I could sense he needed help, but his appearance was a bit intimidating momentarily," Smith wrote. "I could have been afraid he might bite, and he could have been afraid I'd harm him, but there's a connection that occurs when you're in the right place at the right time... when you know, you know!"
As Smith felt an instant trust, the unfamiliar dog reciprocated, recognizing he was safe. She spoke gently to the pup, whom she named Deputy, as he approached. Deputy extended his paw, seemingly asking for assistance.
Falling in love instantly, Smith welcomed Deputy into the sanctuary, where he would undergo quarantine before mingling with other residents. Before that, he needed to meet Kumo, the guardian dog, through a wooden fence.
"Kumo is our pack's alpha and the friendliest dog ever. Before Deputy can enter, they must meet before quarantine," Smith explained.
Excitement radiated as Kumo extended his paw through the fence to greet Deputy. Less than a week later, Deputy completed quarantine and seamlessly integrated into the pack.
Now, Deputy spends his days frolicking with his canine companions and nights cuddling with his rescuer. Smith expressed in an Instagram comment, "He's becoming more and more comfortable, that's for sure. He's made himself right at home."
While Smith aspires to find Deputy a perfect forever home, for now, he is secure at OTGAS, "living the dream." To support animals like Deputy, donations to Off The Grid Animal Sanctuary are welcomed.
