Locked in a rusty crate with no known origin, she was surrendered to the local animal shelter, already struggling with overcapacity. Sadly, due to her pregnancy, the shelter scheduled her for euthanasia last Friday.
With just a solitary hour left, compassionate individuals, alongside a Dallas-based volunteer, stepped in to rescue her in the nick of time. However, the dog was in distress, vomiting and unable to rest.
The volunteers promptly transported the dog to an emergency veterinary clinic and reached out to Dallas Dog RRR for assistance in covering the accumulating medical expenses.
ANNA'S URGENT CALL FOR A MIRACLE! Rescued from the shelter's euthanasia list with only one hour to spare, Anna and her (at least) 15 babies are facing high risks. Anna started vomiting, and given her small 20-pound frame and the number of puppies, she is in a critical condition. Her due date is uncertain, and she has not started lactating.
On Monday, a sizable number of puppies arrived. The dedicated staff at Alma Animal Hospital, along with three volunteers from Dog RRR, swiftly took action. Anna underwent anesthesia, and an emergency C-section was performed. Inside her uterus were 15 puppies, all of varying sizes, with some on the smaller side, but it was determined that they were all full-term.
Anna was in a very fragile state, and concerns about her well-being were paramount. Each assistant was entrusted with a puppy, and their responsibility was to massage, suction, maintain warmth, and facilitate breathing for the newborns. It was a collective team effort, with everyone providing support and dedicating all their efforts to ensure the puppies' survival.
It was a challenging and emotionally trying day with moments of both hope and despair.
Regrettably, seven out of the 15 puppies did not make it.
However, Mama Anna and her remaining puppies are doing fine. She is gradually regaining consciousness and being introduced to her little ones. Here is a photo of Anna meeting one of her babies for the first time!
